Techmetals, Inc. offers electro-polishing (EP) and TM-BioBrite (medical grade validated electropolishing EP) which can be performed on a variety of different metals; 300 SS, 17-4 SS, 400 SS, Copper Alloys, Nickel alloys, Cobalt alloys, Heat Treated Stainless, Low Carbon Steels, Aluminum Alloys, and other Precipitating Hardening Grades of Stainless steel. As part of Techmetals Inc.’s commitment to superior quality all of our electropolish processes are validated for processing. An on site research and development facility allows Techmetals to tailor our electropolishing to specific customer and parts needs; this allows for new Electropolish processes and specialty procedures to be developed upon customer request. TM-BioBrite Electropolished Parts
Electropolishing is an electrochemical etching and passivation process that is used to de-burr, smooth, and brighten parts. Electrolytic reactions cause ionic conduction resulting in the removal of metal particles from parts. Metal dissolution reactions with the electrolyte form a viscous resistive layer film at the surface of the metal; the viscous layer is thicker over the valleys than over the peaks of the surface. This causes de-burring, smoothing, and brightening by removal of material from the peaks and leveling the surface. Electropolishing is typically used in industries for de-burring of tools/ equipment, visual enhancement, passivation, improved corrosion resistance, surface inspection, and for functionality purposes.

BioBlack Titanium Anodize & BioBlack II Medical
Techmetals proprietary Black Titanium Anodize process (TM-BioBlack) is a black titanium anodize process that can be performed on grades 1-4 titanium and grade 5 (Ti6Al4V) titanium. Techmetals Black anodize process uses a proprietary solution that forms a black shaded oxide layer on the surface of parts without the use of dyes or paints. This oxide layer formation is similar to the formation of Type II Gray and Type III color Titanium Anodize oxide layers. TM-BioBlack has a thicker oxide coating caused by a different electrolyte and operational parameters. The porous oxide layer formed has a semi-gloss finish to it and is ideal for applications requiring black visual criteria. Although the black anodize coating has limited wear protection, it does provide anti corrosion protection and can be used for some jobs that require reduced reflectivity and improved light absorption. TM-BioBlack can also be applied in glossy state.
TM-BioBlack is a process that started in our research and development facility and is now in routine production. This is a great example of how Techmetals onsite research and develop facility allows us to tailor our processing to specific customer and parts needs. Development of barrier layer coatings to achieve specialized surface performance or vapor deposition vacuum process that achieve strong bonds between coating and substrates are just some of the specialty R&D capabilities Techmetals has with titanium. MedaDize Validated Color Ti Anodizing and
Techmetals, Inc. offers a variety of titanium anodize options; our validated proprietary processes can do Type III color titanium anodize (TM- MedaDize Color), and Type II gray titanium anodize per AMS 2488 (TM- MedaDize Gray). Titanium anodizing is an electrochemical passivation process that is used to form an oxide layer on the surface of titanium parts. Typically in the medical industry titanium anodizing is done as either a Type II gray anodize for wear resistance properties or a Type III Color anodize for part specific visual identification.

Type III Color Anodize
Techmetals Type III color titanium anodize (TM- MedaDize Color) produces an oxide layer of variable thickness. This oxide layer reflects and refracts light waves which in turn cause the perception of color to the human eye. Color perception is caused by light interference between the oxide layer and base metal. Observed color is based on the thickness of the TiO2 “oxide” layer that grows during the anodize process. Since the oxide layer thickness can be controlled a wide array of colors can be produced without the use of dyes. Interference color wavelengths are formed by the refraction of light off of and through the thin titanium oxide layer. It is not the oxide itself that is perceived by the viewer, but its effect on light waves.
Only certain wavelengths can be seen based on the thickness of layer at any certain point. The oxide layer depth is measured in angstroms (Å=1/100,000,000 centimeter). This layer can vary in thickness from 500 to 1,000Å+ depending on the color. If the visible wavelengths are read as transmittance, fraction of incident light at a specified wavelength that passes through a sample, and graphed over voltage applied as color spectrum can be observed. This spectrum shows how the wavelengths change and cycle over again as the voltage increases. As the oxide layer grows wavelengths repeat into second order colors. After a thickness of ~3000 Å, the wavelength repetition is so sudden no color can be observed.

By accurately controlling the process variables with CPU based technology Techmetals titanium anodize process is capable of accurately and repeatedly producing a wide array of colors with varying shades and hues. Medical industry standards such as Light Blue, Blue, Gold, Bronze, Vector Purple, Magenta, Sea Foam, and Green can be produced with consistency and accuracy. Colors can be altered to fit any specialty specifications by adjusting such variable parameters. Techmetals can also produce custom colors based on customer needs.
Type II Gray Anodize
Techmetals Type II Gray Titanium Anodize (TM- MedaDize Gray) per AMS 2488 produces an oxide layer that has a porous matte finished gray look and provides increased wear resistance, which is beneficial to implant assemblies and aerospace components.
Type II Gray Anodize is very similar to the color anodize except for that it is intended to produce a thicker oxide layer that provides improved wear resistance. Gray anodize is typically used in the medical and aerospace industries because of its wear resistance properties. The specification for Type II Gray Anodize is SAE AMS 2488.
This electrolyte used to anodize type II gray behaves similarly to the color process with an oxide layer growing on the part. However different tank chemistry and set points causes this oxide layer to be a thicker porous layer instead of a thin boundary layer like color anodize. This porous oxide layer is still very small and is measured in nano meters (nm) instead of Å.
Although it was originally developed for the aerospace industry type II anodize has become a valuable plating option for the medical device and implant industry. This is due to its corrosion resistance, fatigue strength, anti-galling properties, and wear resistance which are all very desirable properties for permanent implants. All of this is possible due to the thick durable oxide layer that is grown on to the part during the anodize process.

Passivation and MedaPass Validated Medical Passivation
Techmetals Inc. offers a variety of passivation options. Techmetals passivation processes can meet standards for ASTM A967, ASTM A380, ASTM F86, ASTM B600, ASTM B912, MIL STD 808, SAE AMS 2700, SAE AMS QQ-P-35, and can meet most customer specification requirements as well. TM-MedaPass is another validated passivation process created by Techmetals for the medical device industry. Passivation is a chemical treatment on metallic surfaces for cleaning and added corrosion protection. The purpose of passivation is for the removal of “free iron” and other exogenous foreign material from a metallic surface. During passivation a thin transparent oxide layer is formed on the metallic surface .This oxide layer is a protective surface film that inhibits chemical and atmospheric corrosion. Passivation is primarily applied to stainless steels and titanium; however other metals can be passivated either by chemical treatments or other means.
No passivation job is too large for Techmetals. Our large 2,400 gallon and 1,300 gallon tanks can process parts up to 15 feet long with a 10,000 lb load capacity. If a job is too large for our current capacity our team of skilled engineers can design a custom process to meet your needs. Our passivation process can run up to 24 hrs a day providing quick turn. Our medical passivation and TM-MedaPass processes are validated to ensure first time quality and exceptional repeatability. TM-Rx-Medical Grade Chromium Coating
Medical Coating TM-Rx is a medical grade chromium coating designed to prevent wear, galling and corrosion. Other properties of this coating are lubricity, durability, extreme hardness and a low coefficient of friction. This process is precisely controlled by our lab staff and engineering. Parts and instruments coated with TM-Rx are designed to work and look like new after 1,000 cycles in an autoclave.
TM-Rx meets or exceeds ISO 10993-1 Certification, as well as the principles governing the biological evaluation of medical devices. Certified report numbers: 331553, 331617, 331621 and 331555.
